Taormina is a small town located on Sicily's east coast. With spectacular views of both the Mediterranean sea and Mount Etna, Taormina is an exclusive destination for visitors looking to immerse themselves in its rich history while enjoying the pleasures of this first-class Ionian sea resort.
Initially built as a private summer house in the late 1800s Century by Robert Trewhella, a Cornish engineer who had participated in building the country's transport infrastructure for many years, Villa Sant'Andrea was transformed into a hotel as we know it today
by his granddaughter Gwendoline in 1950.

Artiq worked alongside the internationally acclaimed Eric Egan of L'Artigianato, and the Belmond team to procure a fully bespoke art collection, highlighting emerging talent from the local area, resulting in an art collection that echoes the history and traditions of the region through a contemporary lens.

Taormina-based painter Alessandro Florio started his career as a tattoo artist but expanded his practice to include works on canvas.
We commissioned nine original works by Alessandro for the restaurant and lounge area. This body of work draws inspiration from eclectic sources, ranging from the art of the Renaissance and the Middle Ages, combining visual symbols and cultural references between Sicily and the Arab heritage in a playful, sometimes irreverent way.

The collection also features work by the Sicilian artistic duo Genuardi/Ruta. Based in Palermo, their practice merges architecture, painting and elements of nature; it is simultaneously ultra-contemporary while hinting at 20th Century geometric abstraction.
A large piece by Pietro Pasolini, acquired via Galleria Valentina Bonomo, greets arriving guests in the reception. The Brazilian-born, Italian-based artist's work is a visual ode
to the beauty and fragility of our planet.
Through the use of oxidations, the work takes
on an evolutionary ability and will continue to evolve alongside Villa Sant'Andrea.
