Sat on a knife edge between image and sculpture, Euan Evans’ practice is labour-heavy. Using densely woven printed surfaces, copper smithing, and plaster etchings, his work explores personal experiences through material processes. Through their form and materiality, these objects share a relationship with the artefacts and narratives of his upbringing in the Cornish landscape.
Euan’s ability to produce new structures from recycling and displacing material is an extension of the compositional practice he developed whilst studying Jazz at Leeds Conservatoire. His musical temperament is evident in the improvisation, texture, and composition of his work and his most recent woven pieces are composed as sculptural graphic scores, influenced by his relocation to London.
These woven surfaces are adapted from primary school knotcraft, a skill from his childhood. Its structure allows Euan to combine different forms of printmaking and mixed media by slicing completed works into strips and interweaving them. By incorporating elements of drawing, printmaking and sculpture, Euan’s work finds agency through the interplay of substrates and colour.
