Lara Sayegh is an Iraqi artist based in London. Working in oil on aluminium and linen, her practice explores movement, light and the natural world. Drawing on her close relationship with the sea through surfing and kitesurfing, Lara creates large-scale abstract paintings that evoke the rhythm of waves, shifting currents and underwater light through luminous layers of colour, sweeping gestures and richly textured surfaces.
Rather than depicting the landscape directly, Lara translates the sensations of being in the water – the pull of a current, the quiet beyond the breaking waves, the shifting quality of light – into colour and gesture. Her process is intuitive and responsive, allowing the paint to guide the direction of each work, much like responding to the changing conditions of the ocean. Left intentionally open to interpretation, her paintings invite viewers to slow down and form their own connection with the natural world.
