Brazilian-born, London-based artist Rômulo Avi approaches his work as a process of excavation. Informed by his training in both architecture and painting, he builds dense, shifting surfaces by layering and reworking paint with sandpaper, glazes, and printmaking squeegees. Throughout the process, Rômulo applies colour intuitively, allowing images to surface unconsciously before reabsorbing them back into the composition.
Working across painting, printmaking, and scagliola, Rômulo’s practice explores the fluid space between representation and abstraction. His works evoke imagined landscapes and emotional states shaped by his ongoing research in philosophy, myth, and literature. The resulting works are tactile and atmospheric, inviting viewers to move through layers of memory, sensation and possibility.
As the winner of Artiq’s inaugural Creative Careers Prize at Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair, Rômulo is currently engaged in a year-long mentorship program with Artiq, supporting the development of his practice with industry guidance and opportunities for growth.
