Shumaiya Khan is a British Bengali artist, writer, and creative. Having studied design at university, she fully resumed her painting practice in April of 2020. Experimenting with texture and motion, she creates abstract works that explore feminine expression, societal interaction, morality & spirituality.
Inspired by the critical theory that informed her design work, Shumaiya uses oils, acrylic, charcoal and chalk to build abstract compositions across canvas and paper.

Layering pigment over a series of days or weeks, she uses different viscosities of colour to add dimension and texture to the vast worlds she creates.
In juxtaposition to her lengthy, full-colour works, Shumaiya also produces fast-paced,monochromatic pieces on raw canvas and paper. Brush strokes and charcoal marks are made with varying intentionality, creating a physical, visual language that works towards an ever evolving image in Shumaiya’s mind.
