First opened in 1854, the Great Northern Hotel underwent an extensive refurbishment that took five years and was completed in 2018. Today, it
is one of the finest luxury boutique hotels in London.

Artiq and the Great Northern Hotel have in common the belief in supporting emerging talent and worked together to build a strategy that passionately showcases the best of the emerging art scene. Each lift lobby area displays one artist's work, essentially creating mini-exhibition spaces for the guests to enjoy; as they emerge on any specific landing, they see the next, potentially, great British artist.
Perhaps the most exciting part of this extensive collection is the stunning installation by artist Debbie Smyth, commissioned by the Great Northern Hotel.
Debbie is a contemporary artist specialising in creating unique textile artworks, often in her signature pin and thread style, building bespoke installations, such as this tapestry-like wall piece.
'A String of Thoughts' is the focal point in the hotel's central staircase, depicting a journey of discovery embracing some of London's iconic landmarks, connectivity, and rich heritage through Debbie's intricate thread art.
