Leman Locke is a design-led aparthotel for free-thinkers who want to experience the unique and authentic. Designed for travellers for whom a bed and shower in a shoebox isn’t enough, Leman Locke embeds you in East London’s creative culture with socially-immersive public spaces and events that connect you to a community of like-minded locals and travellers.
ARTIQ’s COO and Head of Hospitality, Katie Terres worked directly with owner/developer, the edyn group, to commission a series of bespoke artworks for the suites. Inspired by design and locale, the art consultancy sought to develop a brief that would reflect the dynamism of Leman Locke’s urban location and compliment the industrial interior design scheme.
Jay Rechsteiner is a multi-disciplinary & conceptual Swiss artist based in London. Anarchic and playful, Jay’s work creates impact through process, incorporating aspects of change, new direction and abandonment to create each piece. He has exhibited internationally (Japan, USA, UK, Switzerland, Italy, Portugal, France) in galleries and museums such as the Fukuoka Art Museum, Whitechapel Gallery, Tate Liverpool, the London Art Fair & the Venice Biennale.
To create the work on show, Jay took a selection of his old paintings and created new artistic interventions on top of it. This process of building and altering, gives the work a textural complexity to juxtapose with the minimalism of colour and shape. With lines such as ‘One day I’ll be ready’, Jay’s work provides the perfect nod to the concept of dynamism and reinvention and is designed to speak to the modern traveller with a taste for play and exploration.
